We took on Ironman 70.3 Louisville. It was a race filled with an amazing but toasty swim, rolling Kentucky hills, and a whole lot of heat from start to finish. In this video, we bring you along for the full experience: the highs, the challenges, and what it feels like to race through the heart of Louisville.
Race snapshot
- Race: Ironman 70.3 Louisville
- Location: Louisville, Kentucky, USA
- Date: August 17, 2025
- Conditions: Hot
- Big storyline: It was hot and humid. Fortunately it was also overcast, so it wasn’t as hot as it could have been.
The lead-up
We drove to this race from Austin, Texas. We met Colin and Katy in Nashville then made our way north to the Bluegrass State. It’s always fun when we can share these race week experiences and travel together.
What happened on race day
Colin and Caitlin were taking on the day. Tiffany was sidelined, but coaching and cheering passionately with Katy along the course.
Swim
It was a downstream river swim. Very easy to site and not crowded. The swim did have a nice current assist.
Bike
Lots of hills and the heat started to make itself known early.
Run
Still lots of hills. And heat. This was a grinder for sure. But there was great spectator energy along the way and the volunteers were amazing. There was even a “cooling bus” along the course in anticipation of the extreme temperatures and humidity.
Takeaways from this race
- It was hot.
- It was hilly.
- August isn’t the best time of year for a 70.3 in Louisville.
The moments that stayed with us
Lining up for another race is always special, but it’s the moments before and after we really enjoy. From cooking at the airbnb to the laughs with Colin and Katy, those are the real reasons we cherish this sport.
Would we race it again?
Probably not if it’s in August. But there are so many more races out there, we aren’t itching to come back to this one right away (although shortly after this year’s race, it was “suspended” indefinitely by Ironman).
